3 Things You Need To Do Before Painting

Before starting a painting project, there are several important preparatory steps to ensure a successful and long-lasting result. Here are three key things you need to do before painting:

  1. Surface Preparation:
    • Clean the Surface: Start by cleaning the surface you intend to paint. Dust, dirt, grease, and grime can affect paint adhesion. Use a mild detergent and water to wash the surface, then rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.
    • Repair Imperfections: Inspect the surface for imperfections such as cracks, holes, dents, or peeling paint. These issues should be addressed before painting. Fill cracks and holes with an appropriate filler or patching compound, and sand the patched areas smooth after they’ve dried. Scrape off any loose or peeling paint and sand the edges to create a smooth transition between the old and new paint.
    • Remove Wallpaper: If the surface is covered with wallpaper, it’s typically best to remove it before painting. Wallpaper can create adhesion issues and may not provide a smooth surface for painting. Use a wallpaper scraper and follow proper wallpaper removal techniques.
    • Priming: In some cases, applying a primer may be necessary. Primer provides a smooth and consistent surface for the paint to adhere to and can help cover stains or discoloration. New, unpainted surfaces, stained areas, or surfaces with distinct color changes may require priming.
  2. Protection and Masking:
    • Protect Adjacent Surfaces: Cover and protect areas that you don’t want to be painted. Use painter’s tape and drop cloths to shield baseboards, window frames, trim, and other adjacent surfaces from paint splatter. Ensure that the tape is applied securely and straight for clean lines.
    • Remove or Cover Furniture: If possible, remove furniture and other items from the room or, at the very least, move them to the center of the room and cover them with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to prevent paint from accidentally splattering on them.
    • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in the area where you’re painting. Open windows and doors to allow for air circulation, especially if you’re using paint with fumes. Consider using fans to improve ventilation.
  3. Gather Materials and Plan:
    • Select the Right Paint: Choose the appropriate type of paint for your project, considering factors such as the surface material (wood, drywall, metal, etc.), location (interior or exterior), and the desired finish (e.g., satin, semi-gloss, matte). Select high-quality paint that meets your specific needs and preferences.
    • Calculate Paint Quantities: Measure the surface area you plan to paint to determine how much paint you’ll need. It’s generally a good idea to buy a little extra to account for touch-ups and future needs. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for coverage on the paint can.
    • Organize Painting Tools: Gather the necessary tools for your project, including brushes, rollers, paint trays, extension poles, paint sprayers (if applicable), and paint cans. Make sure your tools are clean and in good working order.
    • Plan Your Approach: Plan the sequence in which you’ll apply the paint. Typically, you’ll start by cutting in at the edges and corners with a brush before using a roller for the main surfaces. Follow recommended drying times between coats and consider the number of coats needed for full coverage.

Proper surface preparation, protection, and planning are essential to ensure a successful and efficient painting project. Taking these steps before you begin painting will help you achieve a professional finish and avoid common issues.
